hey guys, im new to fish. But i have a general jist of what to look for (as i study Ecology at university).

however i was wondering if the following fish would be suitable for my fish tank.

40 Gallon Fish tank (Fresh Water Tropical Community Tank)

2 Angel Fish
4 Dwarf Gourami's
1 Swordtail
4 Platies

All of which will be the same sex of the same species. eg: the 2 angel fish will be same sex, as for the Dwarfs, Swordtails and platies, will this in any way harm them? or make them more agressive due to testosterone build up when they are in heat?

I went by the general rool of 1inch of fish to 1 gallon of tank. i ended up with 41 inch of fish. Is this a good rule of thumb to use? Basically do you think this fish tank would be over crowded ? or could i still fit a few more platies in there for example?

Do you think this tank would be a good community with limited, if at any agression between the fish at all?

Thankyou for your help, Very sorry about these Noob questions. Any help is appreciated

Its not overstocked, you could add few more plaites. My only suggestion is to make the gouramis 1 male to 2 females as there will be less agression in the tank. Even better have all the gouramis female. Sexing of angel fish is near impossible but keep an eye out as these are cichlids and tempermant my vary.

thats all good should run fine. I would keep an eye on your angles tho, they look good but are quite nasty sometimes and get quite jelous of other fish's fins, so keep an eye on your guppies and the angles. Not usually a problem but CAN be.

I think I might pass on the swordtail if I were you. They are a bit fast and whizzy for dwarf gouramis who are easily stressed- I would have thought platies would make better tank mates. A lonely male would harrass (and hybridise with) any female platies; a lonely female I suppose would be ok to socialise with the platies- might still hybridise if you have male platies.

Make sure you get the gender ratios right anyway; male swordtails and platies are little sex machines, so you either want a ratio of 2-3 females per male, or females only, or at least 5 male platies (but only 1 male swordtail per tank).

As said above, male gouramis are territorial, so you want 1 male only and a little harem for him.

The angelfish are probably better as a pair, but you can ask that in the New World Cichlid forum.

hehe, thanks for the comments all, its really helping keep it up :)

However out of curosity what other guppies would work ?

hate to double post, however would a convict child be a better or equal choice to angel fish, if i get 2 female convicts?

Guppies wouldn't work. In my knowledge I don't think convicts would work either. Most Cichlids really can't be mixed with community fish as cichlids are quite a bit more agressive. Some other cichlids that would do better are Bolivian Rams, or German Blue Rams.
