Just setting up my cube tank with tropica plant substrate and some black gravel and i have only used half of the plant substrate and i want to put the rest in my 7 gallon, only thing is it has got sand as a substrate, will the sand seap through allowed the subsrate to get to the surface? How about a thickish layer of sand and then some mts snails maybe?

I dont think there is a way of stopping substrate layers mixing, no matter what you have, so think they'll mix given time. The MTS will help with that process too!

You could use a gravel tidy, it's what i've used to keep the 2 layers separate. It also stops the MTS's from burrowing into the bottom layer and mixing it with the sand.
The stuff i use i got from the fish shop and was meant for marine fish. It was quite expensive for what it is, but after i had bought it i found some in a garden centre on huge rolls, where they keep things like bubble wrap and polythene on huge rolls. This was the same stuff just green, which if hidden well wont matter too much.

thanks for the replies, i just went and did it any ways, got a thick layer of sand on and will get some mts or just get a chopstick or something to stir the sand. Just have to wait and see what happens with the substrate, says it doesnt affect the water chemistry if used properly but im assuming that means if it gets to the surface it might, will just have to do regular water testing to see.

I have the Tropica Substrate under small size Gravel, and it only comes to the surface if a plant is pulled out or if i put the Gravel Vac in too deep, you can't see it though as the gravel is much the same colour as the substrate.
Can't help with sand, sorry.
