I've had 7 dalmation molly fry in a breeding net for about 2 months now and they are about an inch in length, a tad bit smaller. Like 3/4 of an inch to be more exact. So I figured they would do okay in the main tank as I didn't have anything too big to eat them. This is what is in my 29 gallon:
2 glass cats(the others died due to an unknown nitrite spike
)
1 dalmation molly
1 german blue ram (other died in nitrite spike
)
5 neon tetras
1 glo-lite (thrown in the bag with neon tetras)
1 red-tailed rasbora (thrown in the bag with neon tetras)
1 bumblebee catfish
1 albino cory (survivor of a tank crash)
1 green cory (survivor of a tank crash)
1 rubber lip plec
(I know most of these species do well in larger groups but I am currently waiting for my 120 gallon to cycle so I can add the fish from the 29 gallon into it and slowly build on their schools/groups.
)
Anyways I slowly let the fry swim out of the breeding net and into the main tank. They all traveled together and explored everything, especially the algae wafers that had sunken to the bottom of the tank.
So I monitored them for about an hour and my german blue ram came out of the plants and kept a VERY close eye on the fry. It was like he was "waiting" for one of them to stray from the "pack" of the other fry. When one did, he would kind of dart at them and flare up his dorsal fin. He never really nipped at them just charged at them, but that was too much for me.
I ended up scooping up the rest of the fry and putting them back into the breeder net. I guess I will have to wait until they get a little older.
