Ok so my female has a swollen belly and after some advice I decided to spawn her with my plakat. (the belly is eggs for sure) They have both been fed on Hikari and Blood worm and are in good health. The male built a bubble nest days and days ago so i introduced my female. She swam around and he flared at her but took a nip and she swam straight into his bubble nest and destroyed it..... so I took her out to try again after the weekend ( I know he will have repaired his nest by then and he can see her and displays to her through the glass (their tanks are next door) Did I do something wrong or does this just happen sometimes? maybe I removed her too soon but with a destroyed bubble nest I didnt see the point of leaving her....

can you put her in a glass or breeder net or something, actually in the tank with him? it helps if they are in very close proximity, if she is in a separate tank she can just swim away out of sight, if she is in a glass actually in the tank she is forced to get to know him (without getting hurt)

and as for her destroying the nest, sometimes females will do this with the first nest, as if to say "you can do better than that" and then accept an identical nest later!
Personally i would probably have left them together for a little longer, unless he was hurting her (a few light nips don't count) as quite often he will rebuild the nest pretty quickly.

Did you have her in a chimney within his tank for a day or so first?

The most common tip I give people is to avoid the temptation of taking the girl out early. As long as there is no major damage, she can be left in (assuming you're watching out for fin damage) :)

Ok so I left them together for a few days, he built a new bubble nest and when I let her out he seemed desperate to spawn trying the classic 'wrap movement' but she just turned around flared and bit a huge chunk out his tail.... I left them together longer resisting the instant feeling of 'get him out of there' but she bit out more chunks and seemed to get more aggressive! Im at a loss!

What's going on now? Mine did kind of the same thing today but the other way around, the female kept coming up under the nest, receptive behavior all the way, and the male attacked her. Wanna swap males? Lol

lol swap females you mean! I have put her back in her own tank her tail has recovered, Im going to try them again nearer the full moon thats the advice on KG bettas so Maybe I will try that. Their tails are both repaired now, they repair really fast on bloodworm and Hikari so I feel a bit better about that. I think it just frightens me to see them biting at each other I dont want them to be hurt!

a slight bit of damage is ok, but there are some pairs that just DO NOT GET ALONG. I had a really really nice mg pair that the female would atempt to kill the male on site.
