Hi, i've just noticed a small area of furry fungus, possibly from a wound, on on side of the head of my Satanoperca Leucostica. I've got some anti fungus/finrot treatment but no hospital tank, spare filter or heater. (Something I've been telling myself i should get but haven't).
The advice I need is it best to treat him in the tank he shares with bala shark, SAP, catfish and angel fish; or put him in the smaller tank with guppy's, plec and rasboa tetras. Neither seems a good idea so if anybody has any other suggestions they'd be greatly appreciated. Have a large plastic mixing bowl to "quarantine" him in a tank to keep the temperature, but i'm concerned about filtration.
Thanks

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish of each type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

The bowl no good i'm afraid. Reasons why.
To small.
Fish can jump out of the bowl.
No good without an airstone.
Ammonia, and nitrites will soon build up.

How did the fish get the wound.
How did the wound look.

I wouldn't advise adding anti finrot and fungus med by interpet. I'ts not very good med, and it has been known to cause side affects and fish deaths.
I think myxazin by waterlife a better choice in med for fungus which has grown on dead tissue.

tank 1
300l
1 x threadfin catfish
2 x angelfish
2 x amazon puffer
1 x sick Satanoperca Leucostica
1 x albino frog

Ammonia 0.1, Nitrite 0.1, Nitrate 25, approx 7.5

tank 2
120l
1 leopard sailfin plec
9 adult guppy
19 guppy fry
8 rasbora

Stats as above except nitrate 10.
Also snails in both tanks

I don't know how or if the injury occurred, was really just assuming that was what caused the "fur". It's oval in shape, about 5 mm long and starts 5 mm behind one eye.
I've got a plastic (about 15 litres) box and can rig up an airstone. can get a heater sorted but not a filter. would this be any good. |If so how often should i change the water to prevent ammonia etc building?
Thanks

moved the fry to the big tank in a floating box, sick fish to smaller tank and treating that. Guess that's the best of 1 available option???????????

What's the make of the test kit you are using.
How many bala sharks do you have?

What med have you added?

Test kit is Interpret easy test. I'm going to get a new one as the results are almost identical all the time for both tanks, even though both have different substrate/plants/rocks/fish and even water (1 tank is almost totally RO) etc. Not saying the results are wrong but for peace of mind.....Does anybody have any recommendations, I was thinking of test strips as a good option?
I nipped out and got some Myxazin but unfortunately it didn't work, or it was too late for it to work. Rupert died this evening.
There are 2 Bala sharks and intend adding 1 more, both juvenile and don't bother any of the other fish. (Yes, a bigger tank is in the pipeline as they grow).
Both puffers are very playful and if anthing are a bit too placid which makes feeding hard work.(probably adding 2 more maybe 3)
The catfish doesn't seem to be a problem but we don't see to much of him. One angel fish keeps itself to itself. If there's a bully in the tank it's the other "angel". It thought it was Christmas when the fry appeared in their breeding box in the tank so had to remove them and they spent a day in a foot spa. (Water was kept at a good temp and the massage bubbles were great aeration
All the fish in both tanks seem fine. Assuming things stay that way, would it be safe to assume that a wound leading to infection caused the death?

I would over filter your tanks with them being pretty well stocked.

Test strip cards are a waste of money. They don't give accurate readings.
Liquids test kits like api, tetra are good brands to buy. Liquid test kits are far better.

Thanks very much for the advice. I must admit that testing using "dissovable" tablets seems more of a necessary chore on par with hanging out the washing!
The 120l tank, with the guppy's, rasboas and plec has a fluvel 3 with an airstone (large ball type)
The 300l tank has aCF-1200 external filter and an AT-882 internal (both aqua one) and 5 assorted size airstones.
If anybody reading this is familiar with these filters and has any comments about their effectiveness or suitability any advice would be appreciated. I'm still very near the bottom of the learning curve so i'm never offended if it's pointed out that i'm doing something not right!!

You will need a bigger tank as the bala sharks get bigger.

Yeah I know, it's part of the " master plan", the largest is only about 3 inches at the moment. I plan on gradually upgrading. Buy a bigger tank, shuffle the fish along and sell the smaller each time etc etc

Ok.
Good Luck.
