what is the best way to treat a scaleless fish with a disease, i.e. a black ghost knife (purely in example) with a disease? all the meds I have say no to treat scaless fish,... I wanted to pick one up to put in a 55 gal, but I won't get one if I can't treat him if he gets sick,.. it would just be cruel to own him an not be able to cure it if it gets an illness,... what I'm getting at is, are there special meds for scaleless fish? and can I use those in the same tank as fish with scales, in case the whole tank is infected with something?

I'm not too sure but I think the only true scale less fish is a SW shark

most antibacterial meds are fine at a full dose for a scaleless fish. Parasite meds can be alot tougher on fish, and usually they are treated with half a dose. What meds do you have that you are looking at right now?

I have mostly old ich meds,... I just want to know if there is a drug for scaleless (or semi- scale,... whatever :p ) that I can use safely on scaled and non scaled. (ich meds were on sale,.... why not buy the whole shelf? )

what kind of fish

generally you use half the dose with ich meds. Some meds do say to not use with scaleless fish, clout is the first one comes to mind. Honestly i have never had an ich outbreak. I believe prevention is the best method, and keeping your water quality tp notch, and quarenting all new fish before putting them into the tank also prevents many diseases.

i always use ich meds at half dose
i've only ever had one ich outbreak and used Nox-Ich at half dose and it worked fine.

I use melafix at half dose too when needed but the best way to clear a little disease is water changes. clean water = healthy fish

ich however doesn't go away so easily so yeah, half dose of malachite green does wonders in 4 days

I have used both Myxazin and Protozin both made my Waterlife with knifefish, loaches and synodontis to treat ich and other diseases at full dose and never had any problems.

I use WS3 - It's pretty good and it just says for scaleless fish use a half does...

I think half dose is the way to go. :)

I can't speak about most scaleless fish, but I can mention something about corys. They don't get ich, and if you are treating a tank for it, the best thing to do is to remove them. Not only is the medication bad for them, but the increased temperature that is usually used with it will do them no good and perhaps cause them to come down with a bacterial infection.

Since ich infests the entire tank, it's usually best to treat the whole tank and take out corys and others who are not infected, but otherwise it's usually best to isolate sick fish and treat them as needed in a quarantine tank. :D
