i have had my betta fish, named wolfy after mozart in amadeus, for a little over a year now. in september, i will be off to college. at first, i was going to take him with me, but now i'm not sure, as i will be traveling home every so often on breaks and such. i can't just leave him in my dorm by himself, nor would i trust a roomie to feed him for me, so i would have to be bringing him home and back every time i leave. how would he handle this? i wouldn't be driving, i would be traveling by train.

I will be in a similar situation. I am heading back to school in a week and need some ideas on how to move Jack. I read other posts that said to put the fish in a jar(holes in the top of course) and travel with tank water secured, but I'm just wondering if there are any other ideas out there that may be easier for me. I will be traveling very little back and forth from home, only on vacations where they kick us out of the dorms, so that isn't a problem for me.

Lyn, if you are going to be gone for only a day or two, you can just leave wolfy at the dorm. A fast once in a while is good for them. That will just put less stress on both of you, and if you will be gone a little longer than that, either take him, or learn to trust your roomate. It's not that hard to feed a fish, and a skipped meal wont kill him. Just make sure the roomate knows how much to feed him and when, and also how to tell if there is a problem with him like a bacterial infection. The only times I will bring Jack home are the major breaks, like Thanksgiving, winter break, spring break and Easter. And since I am at a religious school :/ we have extra days off for christian holidays. I know I will be going home more times than those holidays, but I have known my roomates for one or two years, and I trust them completely, and one of my roomates is bringing her fish. Anyways, sorry for the long winded rant. That many trips is not that good for wolfy, so just take him for long breaks. And traveling with him frequently on the train probably isnt a great idea either, but obviously you have no other mode of transportation. So just leave him at school for short breaks, and learn to trust the roomate. That's all the advice I can give you.

I'm sure you'll be able to find people on campus that keep fish - and know what they're doing - it doesn't just have to be your roomate. See if they can betta sit for you when you go home in their dorm room, or if they live close to campus, at home. A friend of mine got stuck with someone else's betta for x-mas vacation when he accidently left it in his dorm room and was already 3 hours away back at home. She ended up taking him home and just brought him back with her the next semester. He was fine, but I have to wonder about the boy who forgot him.
