How long can you keep fish in a bag after you have bought them? Im hoping to go to wholesale tropics in london but i have a good 1 1/2 hour journey on tube and train to get home. Im not sure if this would be ok for my fish? Anyone got any advice?
many thanks

In my honest opinion i think anything up to 2hrs is fine depending on the fish. But if you are going to transport the fish in plastic bags for a long time, you should have as few fish per bag as posible ideally so the water stays cleaner in the bag for longer. Also insulate the bag- wrapping newspaper or a towel around the bags will help prevent them cooling down too quickly. Putting the bags in boxs in a safe place in the car (ideally where there isn't much vibration when the car is being driven) is also good to help prevent the bags falling over in the car :good: .

For transporting fishes in my car I put the in the portable fridge I've got (obviously with the fridge off) - find as it is insulated it keeps them nice and snug and by putting them in a carier bag and securing the carier bag outside of the lid they're nice and secure so don't move too much :)

Any one tried to transport them on public transport? I have to go on tube and train to get to bethanal green in london

You need to keep them warm, i had fish bagged as long as 1 fish in a bag for 12-16 hours with no problems.

But u need to keep them warm, find a small poly box which can hold 4-6 bags in it.

WST is a great shop not been there for years but is always a great chance to see something different.

ask in the shop they may have some small boxes

12 hours is no problem for properly bagged fish. Use a cooler for transporting, I've seen folks use one of those soft sided ones for a bag or two.

Another trick if you find a fish you can't live without, on the spur of the moment is to tuck the bag inside your shirt for the trip home. Your body heat will keep the bag warm.

Also ask for some amolock to be added.

This locks ammonia away and is good for 2-3 days.

But do not use with pure oxygen as aperantly it reacts together

where i work we say filtered air should last 1 hr for fish if they are going for longer than 1hr we put oxygen in unless its catfish. For expensive cichlids we use geolite as well. The shop should have polystryreen boxes for transport. Also putting the bag side ways (not adviseable if poorly bagged) increases the gas diffusion rate.

1 and a half hours would be fine no problem. As suggested grab yourself a polybox to keep them warm but other than that theyll be fine, how do you think theyre imported from country to country if they wouldnt survive for 1 and a half hours?

i was a little worried about the hussle and bustle of the tube but if the fish are put in a cool bag (like the ones you use at cricket , picnic etc.) hopefully they should be sheilded from it i hope!!!!
