I have 2 sponge filters in a small tank and if i was to remove one of them to put it in another tank. would i get ammonia in it and how long would it take to cycle the other tank when i put this songe filter in it?

Im not too sure if you would get ammonia but someone on this site told me when i upgrade to a 240ltr just to add the filter media to the new external and add the fish straight away. So goin by what i was told i would say tou should be alright just keep an eye on you water stats, any changes sould be easy to sort out.

It depends on the stocking of the tank they are running in, and what you plan on stocking the tank you are switching the filter to with.

Let's say, for example, the two filters are in a 20 gallon with 10 guppys. The filters are identical, or pretty much so. It would be safe to transfer one filter and 5 guppys to another tank, and be reasonably safe.

I do this all the time with angel spawns, splitting them as they grow, and running extra sponge filters. If you want to be safe, don't feed the fish for 24 hours before the switch, and feed lightly for the next week. This way the fish produce less waste, and the nitrifying bacteria have a chance to catch up.

If you want to take a filter or media and leave the stocking in the tank you are taking it from the same, generally taking 1/3 from a mature tank causes no problems at all. If you are taking 1/2, do fast for 24 hours, fed about 1/3 normal for the next week, and keep an eye on water parameters. The percentage of media you remove will generally support a corresponding percentage of the bio load. That means in our example tank, half will support 5 guppys, or a smaller plec such as a bristlenose, or a few corys, or ten neons, you get the idea.
