Transfering Fry Into New Tank

I am borrowing a small plastic tank from a friend that I would say is about 15 litres to put my 12 guppy for a month as they grow up. I am not using a heater as I am putting it in our kitchen where the temperature is about right for them and pretty constant. I am also going to use this spare filter that was given to me by a friend, and it is used- but I don't think it's been used for a while.
Anyway, if I am going to take water out of my main tank (as I am due for a water change anyway)and use that in my fry tank as it is already cycled- does the filter need to be cycled too and for how long, as ideally I want to put the fry in the tank as soon as possible as they are currently in a breeding trap? Thanks

First off I'd use a heater, as the kitchen will still be cold at night.

Water is never 'cycled', only the filter. To 'clone' your filter, doing an instant cycle, take 1/4 - 1/3 of the media from your existing filter and out it in the new filter.

I agree with jonty,even though guppys can be kept in cooler water i would still use a heater to keep the temp constant,i have my cory fry tank in the kitchen and its amazing how much the temp goes up and down due to the oven being on etc,& then dropping overnight and thats with the heater in there.

Again has jonty said its the filter media that is the cycle and the heart of your tank.you can put mature media in the filter you have,but you will still need to test daily and do necessary w/c's to keep the water quality good for the growing fry.
When i had livebearer fry i changed 20% of the water daily anyway has this promotes growth has fry release a growth hormone in the water which may stunt their growth if daily/regular w/c's aren't done.

Well is a filter essential, because I think it was OldMan who said on another thread to me that you could just do a water change every 3 days or something?
