Mine do that all the time and I have never trained them, it's instinct for them to jump if they see food out of reach, alot of fish will do this :)

Is it alright for them to do so? I only ask this as dwarf puffers and other puffs could gulp air down that they might not be able to release. Sure different from species to species. :)

thanks :) im trying to train my betta to "jump" out of the water when i tap the tank 3 times, so far im treating him with dried blood worms...unsure how long i will do it for maybe a few weeks and see if he jumps when i just tap then....who knows :)

well on my first attempt he just sort of swam under the blood worm, so i ended up "starving" him for abit ^_^ ok so like 24 hours not even that, say from when i first posted this thread? but anyway yea so he seems to react more to it when hes starved, maybe you should try?

I got shimmer to jump out of the water for food!
i dangeled it near the surface and he just kept diving for it lol =]!
