I have talked to my husband quite a bit about getting a 5 gallon tank for our betta, and maybe even splitting it and having one on each side (can I do that?) .... but I've wondered.... do you treat them as two seperate tanks meaning two filters, two heaters, etc? Would it have to be cycled first? Will the bettas be ok in a seperated tank?

Alot of people divide their tanks for more then one betta. Only possible downside are those cheeky little fellas that find a way round it. And some do. Potentially not a good thing of course. I don't divide any of my tanks but no you wouldn't need two filters and two heaters. Just treat it as a normal 5g tank.
Hugs,
P.

you mean they wouldn't try to hop the divide? When I get ready to get a larger tank, I'm sure I'll ask all this again- I think I'm just making it complicated :)

Put some kind of barrier over the divider so they are unable to jump over, because they will.
