I am setting up a new 80l tank and was going to have all plastic plants but read alot that real ones are better. So thought i'd mix and have some plastic and some real ones just in the background. Can anyone give me advice of how strong a light i would need to keep plants in this size of tank and i would like just stemy kind of plants and mabey some smaller leafy ones mixed in. Can anyone suggest some that are hardy?

Thanks :good:

i'm also looking for the same advice but i think everyones having a tea break, they should'nt be long now :good:

Yeah hopefully, I am just useless with plants usually, so I know I am probably going to be the same with ones in my tank.

Two plants that will do well in pretty much any tank - Java fern, and Hygrophila polysperma.
They are both low light plants too.
Java fern should be attached to rocks/wood (it will grow in the sand /gravel too, just make sure it's only the roots that are covered) and hygrophila polysperma will grow from the substrate like a regular stem plant.
Hygrophila polysperma grows very fast and is very good at eating up the nitrates in the tank water - making it much better for fish.

The only think you need to watch with any plants is where you get them from, as if you buy them from your lfs, you are likely to actually be buying a different type of plant or introduce snails.
I recommend buying those two from http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?...ath=255_276_291 - best quality possible with no snails or anything. All the plants come fully rooted and extremely healthy.
That website has lots of different variety's of java fern (Microsorum pteropus) if you want a variety of leaf shapes.
Browse the plants on that site, and go for anything that is 'easy' and 'low' light and you will have great results with standard lighting :good:.
