Total Mess With Changing Gravel!

Hi,
I have tried changing my substrate from gravel to the nutrient sand stuff. So i took all the water and gravel out(and obviously water). The water went a dreaful brown colour! Ive been doing water changes and that hasnt worked either.
Ive truly messed up my tank here What should i do?!

How long ago did you do it?
What 'sand' did you add back and what else is there as a substrate?

Did it about an hour ago. It was that JBL AquaBasis plus nutrient stuff,for plants. And i added a little bit of the old stuff on stop after doing the first of many water changes as the sand mixed with all the water.
Any help?

You are supposed to put the sand back on top of it to keep it down otherwise it does go all over the place. Did you do this?
I used to use cactus compost in my tank untill I got fed up with it looking like a garden rather than a tank
