I was checking my 5 neon tetras today and noticed that the smallest of the group had some sort of red half moon sort of shape behind his eye where his gills are. It looks like its not too deep but im worried. Its like a cut but i cannot see it too well. I added some Melafix and a little aquarium salt. Is this all i can do?

Size of tank in gallons.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Is the neon being picked on.
Could it be an injury.

Is there any excess mucas on the gill.
Any white edges to the redness.
Does he flick and rub.
Hows the fish breathing.

Its about a 4 Gal tank.
Only 5 neon tetras.
ph around 6.8 to 7. Im am slowly lowering it over the week as i did a 25% water change with tap water with dechlorination in it. I usually have water on hand that has already been chlorinated and is ready to use but i ran out.
I am unaware of the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as i don't have a kit for it. (the pet shop didn't have them in stock)

I haven't witnessed him being picked on, they seem to be quite friendly to each other when im watching. He is the smallest of the group though. His actions as the same as usual. He stays with the group the most often.
The wound just kinda of blends back into the scales and has no real 'boarder'.
Luckily i have noticed it looks slightly better today, its not as red as before. I am going to continue with the treatment i am giving him if that's all i can do and hope it heals up.

I wouldn't mess around with the PH.
Your PH needs to stay at your tap PH. Unless you want to breed them.

Is his red stripe area still vibrant red?

I would add a bacterial med to the tank.

Also get your water tested at the LFS. Ask them if they wouldn't mind writing the readings
down for you.

Also I would advise investing in a liquid test kit. Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, PH.

Oh okay. I only wanted to change the ph because our tap water is very strong as it gets sent down to my town and it has alot of different minerals in it, etc. The original ph of it was around 9 and from what i know that's too high for most fish.

His stripe is still red, the same as the others.

I will try to get a bacterial med and full testing kit soon. I will also ask my pet shop if they can do readings.

Bogwood. Peat in your peat is a good way to lower ph.
But you can only preform small water changes. Not big water changes.
