Ok. So I have a family of cacatuoides and a pair of keyholes sharing the mid to bottom of my 30g tank. I'm looking for a replacement to my large angelfish which typically spent most of its time in the upper section of the water column. Are there any cichlids out there other than angels that don't run for rock or plant cover at the drop of a food flake and would fill my upper portion of the tank. I have been reading and reading but I cannot find any. The only option people keep suggesting are hatchet fish, however I would prefer a solitary or pair of slightly larger fish where poss. Thanks

Although not what you were looking for, and go all over the tank and not just the top, I would suggest rainbows (I have three of these and they make the tank look nice and active. They seem to keep gaining more colour as they mature, they are very active fish and are active from the top to the bottom of the tank. HERE is some info on them. (see bloo's great pic - second down)

If a 30g tank is not big enough (i would need to check this as they are very active), there are also some smaller varieties, take a look at THIS THREAD for some good pics of what they are like.

Let us know what you decide on ;)

Cheers
Squid

Thanks squid.
Had a look at the rainbow. Looks lovely however I remain concerned that I would have simply too many fish fighting for space at the bottom of my tank.

Will bear it in mind, but in the meantime does anyone else have suggestions for large ish south or central American fish which tend to occupy the mid to upper regions of a tank.?
