Well I'm planning out my tank and know what I want for the most part but I really need some fish that will be active in the upper levels of the tank.

So far my fish plan is:
12 Cherry shrimp
5 Otocinclus
5 Zebra Loach
12 Silver Tip Tetra
12 Cardinal Tetra (these will be the last fish added and wont be for a couple of months)

Tank is very well planted and over filtered (two external canisters both rated for bigger tanks).

I'm looking for something fairly peaceful, probably a group of small shoaling fish rather then a couple of larger ones (though I'm open to suggestions). I have room for at least another dozen tetra sized fish or 2-3 larger fish.

Danios would be the obvious choice but I have found previously they like to jump and as my tank has no hood this might not be a good idea (though a good 50% of the surface is covered with floating plants). Long finned fish probably aren't a good idea either the Silver tips tend to be a bit nippy.

Are there any dwarf Cichlids that are happy to be kept in a group?

Guppys, Sordtails, Mollys, Plattys. My favourite 4 fish :) Lots of colourful variations available :)

For some reason the majority of live bearers really dont appeal to me. I dont know why eitherm they arent ugly fish, they are fun to breed and quite interesting but I just never really wanted to keep any.

I was think about a few female Betta's as I'm thinking of getting some males later on (in their own tanks). Need to read up on this though. I think ideally you want around 5 min and I'm not sure how well they will do with the rest. Edit: Yeah cancel that, dont think the females would keep their fins very long with the tetras in there.
