This might sound kind of dumb but i was just wondering.

I have a top fin 60 power filter.

I just got some new filter cartridges puring some rocks into the inserts and it hit me.

can you use the rocks from last months filter in the new filter insert?

It would fill the cartridge more with rocks and it would be better filtration right?

Can you do this? Or is it not good for the aquarium or the fish?

I'm not certain exactly what you are talking about when you say "rocks" unless you are talking about the carbon or other media that is inside the filter packs. If that is the scase, it depends on which they are. Carbon must be changed regularly as it becomes saturate Most of us only use carbon when we have to remove medicines from the tank. Ceramic rings or other types of media should never be changed or replaced as that is where the majority of your bacteria colony is. When you replace them, you are starting your tank into a mini cycle and allowing ammonia and nitrite to build again. You should also only change the actual cartridge when it becomes to worn/torn o function properly. The filter companies only tell you that because they want to sell more cartridges.

On another note, I see that you have been a member since November but your "Group" is still "Validating". In order to be able to post in the other forums and sub-forums, you need to validate your membership by going to the email you would have received when you registered. I'm sure you don't have the email any more so you can go here and have it resent to you. Just make sure you can receive emails from gmail.com as that is the domain that the forum uses.

hey thank you. so much for the info. yea it is carbon and now i know. and i did resend my validation thank you so much for all of your help.

You're very welcome. Since it is the carbon, I would suggest you look into getting something like Seachem Matrix or another similar ceramic type media to use as your filter media. It will never have to be changed (maybe after several years). I use it and when my filter pack on my Whisper filters (same as Topfin which is the version they make exclusively for Petsmart), I put the media from the old pack into the new one so all I am changing is the pack itself thus saving most of my bacteria.
