is there such thing as a too powerful pump? in the process of sorting a new tank out and was thinking of running the new pump on the old tank for a little while too try to build up some healthy stuff so then i could just swap the filter over to the new tank just before i get the new fish in to it. would this be ok or has this got a chance of back fireing?

What do you mean by pump exactly? At first I thought you meant filter, but then you said you want to swap over the filter....

Swapping the filter media to the same filter on the existing tank will help to clone the tank.

no i ment filter. sorry. i intend to put the new filter (which is external) on the old tank for a bit then run it in the new tank, just before i get the new fish. dose that make sence?

All you need to do is just put the media in tank and the bacteria will colonise on to that then put all the media in your new filter and bobs your uncle. There is never any need to cycle any tanks once you have 1 up and running.

thats the plan. am i right in thinking the bacteria will last about 24 hours before it dies off, unless fish are interduced to keep the cycle gooing? (kept wet of course)

More like 12hrs but I wouldnt want to wait that long to find out you can keep the bacteria fed by adding some ammonia as you would a cycling tank.

i'll sort it all out just before i get the fish then, play it safe. the only thing i got to wait to at least Feb/march before i can get them, which is a in the ass. my lfs has just shut down coz he is moving.

yeah i know, went to a different one sunday, had a little bit of bad advice. lol. but any way still sorting out the tank. going to find out if it water tight tonight. that would be a very good start, i think.

Most fish actually enjoy a medium to strong current in their tank, however there are some fish which don't tend to fair well in tanks with strong water currents (like betta's/siamese fighting fish), but most of the time a strong filter is very beneficial, particularly if any of the fish you are having in the tank produce a lot of waste.
