Hello. I have a 55 gal freshwater community tank. I have an Aqueon 75 and two powerheads each pushing 100 gals per hour. 1. Is this too much current flow? 2. Which direction should my powerheads be pointed. 3. Im planning on placing live plants in tank again too much current?
Thanks in advance

It's probably a bit much for most tropical freshwater fishes, but some fish like water movement.

Plants don't care if the water is still or moving as long as they aren't blown flat against the substrate they will be fine.

You could put your powerheads on timers and have one at each end of the tank. Then in the morning you could have the timer turn one on for a few hours then it can go off. Later that day the other one (at the opposite end of the tank) could come on for a bit. I would have both power heads turned off at night when the fish are sleeping.

You can have the powerheads facing any direction. Most people have them blowing lengthwise along the tank, others will stick them on the back wall and face them at the front. It doesn't make much difference which way you have them.

Thanks for info
Never thought about turning them the powerheads off at nite. That wont mess up the undergravel filter will it?

Are you using the powerheads to run the undergravel filter?
If yes, then you will need to keep one running all the time. Alternatively, use the Aqueon to run the undergravel and have the powerheads separate. Just put the Aqueon's intake tube into the ungergravel filter's uplift tube and the Aqueon can draw water from under the gravel and run the undergravel filter.

How much gravel do you have in the tank?
Undergravel filters need between 2 & 4 inches of gravel to work efficiently. Less than 2inches of gravel and they aren't very good. More than 4 inches and they don't filter well either.

What sort of fish do you plan on keeping?

Yes powerheads running undergravel filter all plates connect
Fish are freshwater community tank. Move several from small 20 gal to bigger 55 gal. Currently have cory cats dojos guppies zebras swordtail 1 male betta some feeder red minnows to help tank cycle lost a great looking angel fish due to transfer and a few others. Eventually I will add some rams and some kerbs
The power heads air little air bubbles but thete is a 18 in bubble wand as a back drop plus a little homemade bubble volcano
Try to upload photo but it states too large. My water is 78.3 degrees no nitrates or nitrites water is hard .On alkaline side and I have slight ammonia. Tank has been running since March 28th so not cycled

I post pics on a free image hosting website and put a link on here.
