I had some LEDs laying around, so I rigged up a night light for Rufus, so he's not swimming into stuff while I'm trying to sleep (its pretty dark in my room). The only problem is, its a bit brighter than I had intended. Do you think this is too much light? Also, will it bother any plants that I plan on adding here in the next few weeks?

It might not be too much light, but if he has light shining on him 24 hours a day, he could get stressed out. Like all other animals (some) bettas like dark to sleep

Rufus would really prefer to be in the dark at night..... fish need a nice, quiet time, they do sleep, as I.michelle said. Please get rid of the light.

All fish need 12 hours of darkness, much like we do. If they don't get it they will go somewhat mental, and become prone to illness. Imagine having light all the time, even when you try to sleep. And bear in mind they have no eyelids and cannot close their eyes to the light.

I keep my aquarium light off in my bedroom during the day and turn it on at night. I found putting a male in the tank made him fight his own reflection and caused to much stress. I put a female in there and she is fine. I have one betta any extra light is to much for him he tries to hide under marimo balls, he doesn't have even a lamp near him. It really depends on the fish, but they all like to have several hours of lights out.

I'll switch to one LED, and drop the current from 3V at 20mA to 2.5V at 15mA. That should provide a nice, dim light thats just enough so that he can see through the water at night, but it shouldn't be anywhere near as bright as it is now. I'll also make sure its focused on the side of the tank he doesn't sleep in.

I still don't get why you feel he needs a light.... fish are not people, they don't trip over things in the dark. In their natural habitat, they have dark at night, they sleep in the dark. Why do you feel he needs a light?

I dunno. He seems to get scared when I just shut the lights off. He just drops to the bottom of the tank and hides.

That's not being scared. They do that at night to rest. It's very easy to give our pets human emotions, but he's not scared, trust me.

They do have moonlight though, and that can penetrate the water just as easily as sunlight can. There are some sites about "Moonlights" for aquariums. I would try looking them up and see what they run them at. I don't think a little light would bother him, and maybe it can be positioned in such a way that it's only "lighting" half the tank. So he has half dark, half dim-lit.
