I have a 35 gal planted tank, currently with a HOB filter (not sure of the gph). I just bought a Canister filter rated at 250g/h. Can I run both of them without over filtering my tank?

Hi canoechiq :)

Unless the filters are causing enough turbulence that it bothers your fish, I don't think running 2 filters should cause any harm.

But remember, that you will only have as much beneficial bacteria as your fish are able to provide food for. With the second filter on, they will be just be distributed differently than with only one. :D

Based on the fish in your profile, you shouldn't have a problem running both but the live plants could be a problem depending on what you have. You don't want so much water movement that it uproots or blows your plants over. Running them both together isn't really necessary though as the 250 gph filter will filter your tank 7 times per hour on it's own.

I have some crypto, hygro polysperma, giant val, annubia, hair grass, an amazon sword and some java fern. Right now the only thing affected by the current in the val.

I alwasy run 2 filters on my main tanks. I started doing this simply because I bought a new filter for my main tank and was running both for a few weeks and decided the tank would be better off running both. In addition to that I also run an undergravel filter, and I have yet to have any major problems wtih my tanks.
