After escaping the breeding trap over and over, I have given up and let my single fry swim with the big boys. I put a piece of stocking over the filter intake, but after just a day the filter current slowed down to a trickle and I was worried that it wasn't doing a good enough job of filtering the water. So I switched it to some tulle fabric and it's much faster now, but my poor little fry is all over the place! He swims and goes nowhere, etc. He seems to be able to get around but I'm worried about the faster current taking a toll on him.

btw my filter is a penguin 125 and the tank is the 10gallon in my sig line.

If he has a safe place to go, say a piece of moss etc. he should be fine. The chances of him gettin eaten are higher than him gettin sucked up i reckon.

Goodluck

The theory is though that fry raised in current will be smaller than their brothers/sisters raised without current...

Odd, I've found the opposite. Fry who have had to work and swim hard have grown bigger than siblings that were in a low-flow tank.
i have to disagree ive had fry from previous experiences i raise them in a 10gal and i fed them did water changes and ive had them now for almost 5 months and theyre barely an inch but very pretty
but on the otherhand i just had some fry a week ago and i have hadthem in a tank with no current and a heater and some air i have been cleaning the tank once or twice a week and these guys are so big for being one week old theyre almost the same size as the fry ive had for a couple months

The growth of a fry is affected by many different factors...one of them being the amount of energy they use in a day....the more energy they use trying to swim out of the current the more time it will take for it to grow....thats why you try to feed them in places where they will not have to work so hard to eat it....I think this makes sense to me

Thanks everyone-I guess he'll be fine in there then. It was actually kinda cute watching him go with the current and then swim like mad away from it. He did it a bunch of times so I guess it couldn't have been too bad. Now he's discovered some places where it's not so bad and he can just sit and rest for a bit.

My only problem now is feeding him. Before, I would see him in the fake grass floating on top and quickly shake some food near him. Now the food goes away so fast (due to the current) I'm not sure if he's getting enough of it (or any of it) and he's spending a lot less time hiding in the grass nowadays-I suppose he's getting more confident.

I am sure he will find enough food to eat....fry are really ood scavengers and they always know where there is food.....I can bet that alot of the food will fall into the grass and he will visit the grass to get his fill :D
