hello everyone.
there was a slightly bad smell that was coming out of my fish tank!! so just wanted to ask if my followinf fish are too many for my 2'by4'by1.5' tank?.
my fish are:-
4 medium sized goldfish.
8 neon tetras
1 black ghost knife fish
4 VERY small angelfish
5 adult angelfish
3 zebra danios

p.s: i have a sponge power filter and lods of gravel as biomedia

goldfish fill that tank as it is, and mixing them with tropicals is Bad and shouldnt be done.

your quite over stocked and your selcted stock isnt brill, sorry to come accross like this but IMO you need to rehome the goldfish

I strongly agree with truckasaurus. there is was too many there and also incompatible species i.e. the goldfish with tropicals.
Id worry bout the angelfish in particular, u say you've 4 adult and 5 very small. Angel fish grow to a big size, 9 in a tank is an awful lot. wat gallon size is the tank, i cant work out the formula at the min to get gallon size from tank dimensions lol
How long have you this tank up and running??

:hi: to TFF

4 medium sized goldfish.

These fish are Coldwater (Or Temperate if you want me to be technically correct  ). The rest of the fish you list are tropical, and should not be mixed  I would look to keep one lot or the other, the Tropicals being preferable considering the adult size of common Goldfish... Grow upto 3ft, so 144" of stocking used... Before you say Glodfish don't get that big, I'll point out that my stunted Goldfish brood stock back when i used to breed them used to all be over 18", with 20 being about adverage...

8 neon tetras

Black Ghost Knife Fish food, and Goldfish food if the goldies stay in there long enough... Grow to 2" each, so 16" of stocking used.

1 black ghost knife fish

Upto 18" in captivity, larger in the wild. Will eat fish smaller than 4" if large bodied, 6" if slim bodied. Semi-nocturnal, so will get the fast fish as they sleep, whenever in the day that may be...

4 VERY small angelfish

Watch these with the adult angels and Neons. The Adult angels will often pick on smaller ones, and Neons are this fishes natural diet in the wild  It is unusual for them to pick on Neons in captivity IME, but it has been known... Grow to about 8" in length, 32" of stocking used...

5 adult angelfish

As above for the small ones realy... 40" of stocking used

3 zebra danios

Grow to about 2", and need groups of 4+. Up their numbers, and 8" of total stocking is used...

p.s: i have a sponge power filter and lods of gravel as biomedia

Is the gravel in the powerfilter? If not, are you running a Under Gravel Filter as well? Just trying to work out how the Gravel is acting as BioMedia, as biomedia needs a constant flow of water over it to work as such...

With coldwater fish only being kept, you would be very overstocked, so I'd advise re-homing them...

With the current Tropicals being kept in recomended numbers, you have 114" of adult length fish in the tank, which is arround 200l, or 44g. The Guideline is an inch per gallon, so you would also be overstocked with them... Remove the Black Ghost Knife to avoid 1/2 you're stock becomming very expencive fish food, and you are at 94" of adult length fish. That is a very heavy stocking, but a realy experienced fishkeeper could up-keep that. If you are asking stocking questions though, I'd wonder if you are experienced enough for it... I'd mebe thin out the angels a bit and remove the goldies and BGK to bring you under 2" per gallon and 50% weekly waterchanges with good filtration should keep it going along nicely :good:

If you want to run with the current stocking (minus the goldies), you will need two large canister filters and 50% waterchanges every other day :/

You're call on where to go from here, but to answer your question, ATM, yes, too many fish :good:

All the best
Rabbut

i suggest you get a good test kit which covers all the water conditions and start with the goldfish as the first set of fish coming out of the tank and test the water every week you romove fish and do a water change.
by doing this you are tracking the water conditions until yhe are just right for a healthy tank.

you will need to do some research to understand what the perfect water conditions are for your fish though, so just look them up on the net.
and when tour fish are happy, so are you

and thanks for helping me on my algae proplem 21m.
do have any algae in you 10 FISH OVERSTOCTED TANK!

Hey welcome to TFF :hi:

As mentioned you do have a few fish that need to be weeded out. Golfish are coldwater anyway. Check this: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=43980

Your BGK will eventually eat your neons. " Tank mates may include other 'oddball' fish like eels, butterfly fish and the like, however, they are fine with any non aggressive fish that is not seen as food, so larger community fish like Angels, larger Botia species and many more will do fine." http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=50349

Have you tested your water with liquid tests (not dip strips)?

thanks jallen for knocking some sense intome!!! what was i thinking back there!!!
and by the way i am gonna separate all my goldies intomy fish pond.
others will remain.
