Hi

I was wondering if I could use tonic salts with apple snails in my tank or if it would do them any harm? I need to give my coldwater fish a dose of tonic salts urgently but dotn want to lose my snails they can be put into another tank until the tank has been dosed but would prefer to leave them be if that was ok?

Please help!

hi there

i found this on www.applesnail.net (great for all your apple snail answers) hope it helps

Apple snails tolerate little amounts of salt if you slowly build up the concentration. Be sure that the salt is dissolved before you put it in the tank so that the snail won't get in contact with the pure stuff.
If you see that the snails stay in their shell for more than a day, then lower the salt concentration (if it isn't too late :).

Hi thanks very much for that sharon I must have been looking at the totally wrong bit of that website!

A one of my Ryukins and an oranda have very slight red lines on the end of their tails which after doing some research I reckon is just red fins and they might just be a bit stressed I have tested the water and everything is fine the nitrates were a tiny bit higher than I would have liked but they are due their water change anyway. So I think I will get some tonic salts and just add some gradually over a couple of days of water changes and hopefully they be all right!
