I know you guys hear these stories a lot, but I want to contribute since I rarely go to town as it is an hour away.

First I went to Walmart, I don't get there often.

The fishtanks were pretty much empty save for 2 sick cichlids, with a lot of old food at the bottom. They DO have a filteration system right? No reason for them to be so filthy (they used to be much cleaner!)

The bettas were a very sad sight for me. They shoved about 12 half filled cups two shelves up from the floor, so I had to squat down to even get a look at them. At first I didn't think they had any because they are so hidden! Poor things have been in darkness for who knows how long.

They had a couple of very young cream/light brown girls, adorable really and I can see that if they had a chance they would get some beautiful colors. They were near death though, and I don't know if I could have done anything for them (to be honest, I was tempted to poor them into a clean drinking cup I brought though, like another member did...). The boys were in various states of health, many had odd finnage and strange swimming behaviors. Some didn't move at all, even when I tried to make them.

They obviously have a few young siblings in, there were 3-4 boys who were mostly white, with completely clear fins (what is that called? cellophane?) Two looked ill in some manner, hard to tell with the lack of light, one had a torn fin and was peppered with black spots, and the other was in a cup that was so filled with poo, everytime he went for air he probably got some in his mouth. His cup was the worst I had ever seen.

So I went and got an employee.

Me: "How long have these bettas been in?"
Him: "Uhh, over a week I think..."
Me: "How often do you change their water?"
Him: "Well they're okay right now but I'm sure we will do it soon.."
Me: "Can I take a few sick ones for free, or for a discount? It is me buying the medicine after all."
Him: "Sorry ma'am, I can't do that..."
Me: "I am coming back tomorrow, and I am going to see how their cups look, and if they are still filthy, I am complaining to your boss."

I think I scared him. I am not actually going back tomorrow, but hopefully that kicks their butts into gear!

ALSO get this crap. They have a little rack next to the empty goldfish tanks, where they put little cups with snails and whatnot. There I see three beautiful, pristine, fully filled cups with a betta in each. I looked closer... hmm... crowntails! This made me FUME! The veiltails get stuck on a shelf at the bottom, forgotton, and these guys get special treatment all because of their tail! Walmart sure knows how to work it!

I ended up picking the little one in the debris filled cup. He looked like the one that had the most chance. It was really hard for me, but I am glad I helped at least one. He is absolutely gorgeous, and so clean looking. And he is now swimming happily in a 5 gallon tank, which I think is a serious upgrade! I've never had a betta take so well so quickly, he is already blowing bubbles within 15 minutes of being released! :hyper:

To make a long story longer, I also stopped by the LFS. They had three bettas, all were the purple/teal veil tails, clean bowls at least, but clamped fins. I guess it is an improvement.

After I acclimate the 12 girls Yeevia is sending me, I am going to try and get some pictures of everyone and their tanks. The sand is goooorgeous! Never again will I go gravel!

That is so terrible, I have noticed the same trend at my nearby wal-marts. The crownies have much cleaner water, and are well taken care of while the veils get treated terrible. Now, you wanna hear a bad WM story. This happened to me today, I went to check on the bettas like I do every day, and I look in the other tanks b/c I was looking for some other fish, well they had a crowntail boy in the tetra tank. I was irate! So i went and found the women in charge, and told her the problem. She said that his cup was busted and she didn't have anywhere else to put him. I said that the tetras would nip him and she said, well they haven't yet. After I told her several times that they might(and that is enough reason to move him) she agreed to take him out. Ok now the worst part. She flings her net around like an idiot and is stressing him out terribly. She finally catchs him and throws him in the platy tank!!! I nearly fell over from shock...... then she just walked away. I watched him for a while and they were nipping here and there, but I didn't know what else to do. When I go back tomorrow I will check on him and if he's still there, the manager will be found!!!

The one I was talking about was in Chillicothe, Ohio... I cannot find a phone number or anything? Maybe someone else can. The other day when I was there they had the boy in the tetra tank, but he was in a plastic box thing. I don't know why they even took him out of that!! I wanted to bring him home so bad, but I just don't have any more room :( If any of you reading this are ppl that call these places, please please please do it! I've tried everything possible!! my efforts are endless, with no production coming out of it!

If anyone is pissed off enough about this (including me), maybe if several of us make calls we can get them to do something.

Basically I live in a VERY small area (hence why I have to travel an hour anyway to get there), so it is not nearly as busy as city Walmarts. I would think that it being more quiet would give them time to take care of their fish.

I live in northern Michigan, and I will give the information to anyone interested.

What? You in Michigan?? Not New York??? LOL   I thought it is in NY! OMG! LOL

(740) 774-4800

There's the number for the Chillicothe. I'm calling there. I always ask people to call if they can. I think they're being forced to clean up their act because so many of us are calling and ragging on them about what we see.

Also, please go and put (copy and paste) your stories into my huge walmart thread. I've been busy working on compiling a really big report with photos and stories just like this to submit to the headquarters of WalMart, and copies will be going to the Humane Society of the U.S. and PETA.

oopsy - edited to add the link. sorry!

I'll come back and post in a bit and let you know what I found out.
I'm sure I'll get the "I'll go back there and take a look" from the manager, but you never know. They sometimes surprise me.

Seahorse - I'd be happy to call ANYwhere you want me to.
Just give me city and state and it will be done.

betttamomma- did you call my local petland a couple weeks back when I gave you the number? If so, what did they say? and definitely let me know when you get ahold of walmart tonight. Thanks so much. Also I go to another walmart everyday for work and they have had an end cap full of bettas for nearly a month now. I've complained twice, and they still haven't cleaned the cups. They have green mold and waste all over them, and I'm talking like 50 bettas, please give them a call if you have time also!! Waverly, Ohio

I'm sure they have your number programmed so they know when it's you. Words getting around. At the moment they are shaking in their boots!! When you call you should refer to yourself as bettamomma just so they know how dead serious you are!!!! ;)

okay... first things first - Just got off the phone with the Chillicothe store.

I told her what you told us here - and we discussed several things about the bettas in their store. She said they're going to ask the supplier next time they come in to get a sleeve of extra cups so they have extra cups for when things like this happen.

She also said she's going to go back to the cups area and find a solo cup to get him out of the tank and into right away - and not to worry, I told her to make SURE it's covered.

One last thing - I told her that they should have a betta care sheet by the sink back there so whoever is covering for the regular fish person knows what to do when she's not there.

:)

On to call Michigan - I'll be baaaaaaaaaaaaack.

That is just awesome~ I will inspect tomorrow morning @ 9am when I am there working to make sure.... I'm sure they listened though... I bet you can be quite scary  Let me know if you get ahold of Waverly!

Awesome BM!

OMG I just realized that all their cups were on top of one another, and those poor babies probably are struggling to breath.

Duhhhh, why didn't I fix that  Total brainlock.

Michigan store - the manager was pretty cool there, too.

When I make calls like this, I always start out by saying "I wasn't personally in your store, but I have a friend who was and was telling me about the conditions of your store so I felt compelled to call and chat with you about...."

and then I go on to tell them what I've read here.

I told her about the cts being treated better than the veils, and how they were shoved off to the back, the crappy cup conditions - basically kind of skimmed over your post as I was on the phone with her to make sure I didn't miss anything. She said she's going to go right over there and inspect it herself, and have someone do something about cleaning up the cups, rearranging, etc.

Oh, and I told her about how the guy said the cups didn't need to be changed, and she said to tell you she's sorry you had to deal with that. heh That was pretty cool. I always like hanging up knowing someone's going to get their butt chewed when they royally deserve it. B)
