hello everyone im a newbie and have been recently introducing myself to aquaria and im a little confused on this subject. i have recently read some negative things about power outages and ugf's and i am considering removing mine from my newly cycled and stocked 10 gal tank. i am also considering changing to sand for the well being of my kuhli loach and aesthetics..anyway is a ugf dangerous or not? what is best for my fish? im considering removing my aqua clear filter the ugf and installing a bio-wheel for bacteria support. will the bio wheel support as much bacteria as a ugf? thanks..dan

Hi and welcome to the forum! :)

Since no one has answered your question yet I'll give you my opinion. I wouldn't use an ugf myself. It isn't good for much in my book. It will be ok for a while but you have to maintain it...and maintaining it means keeping all the poop vaccuumed out of the gravel so that it doesn't accumulate and become clogged and all nasty. Eventually even though you keep the poop vaccuumed up on a regular basis you are still going to have to eventually take all the gravel out and the filter and clean them of buildup that escaped your vaccuuming.

It is also not a good filter for a planted tank if you ever want some plants down the road.

If I were you I would go ahead, save myself the trouble down the road, and convert to sand. Its much easier to maintain, looks nicer, and your fish will absolutely love it, especially your bottom feeders. I've been using sand for years now and I couldn't imagine using gravel with bottom feeders anymore. I would feel very sorry for them if I did. :-(

Also IMO the AQ filters are just as good if not better than any biowheel filter. I have an Emperor 400 and while its an excellent filter (aside from the noise it makes), the biowheels can still only go so far. They are not adequate for a heavily stocked tank IMO. I think they're a little too overrated. The washable sponges that are made for AQ filters (washing with old tank water, of course, not chlorinated which would kill the good bacteria) are the best choice for mechanical and biological filtration and 1 or 2 filters with 1 or 2 sponges each would be more than enough.

thank you for the reply..i am heading out for sand tomorrow ..is regular sand pre washed very well from home depot okay? i cant wait to change and see how how much my kuhli loach loves it. im pretty sure hes not liking the gravel buts its only been a couple days..

Aquaclear filters are great. Keep using it and start to experiment with different media to suit your needs. I find mid-rise quilt batting to be a great mechanical filter media for the top layer. Just cut to size.

You can get it at craft stores for $4-$6 a bag and will last a year or more.

Cheaper than inserts. Also, never throw away the sponge, just rinse it lightly, squeeze and reinsert.

UGF are not good, skip them unless you reverse flow it, but if you are going sand then it's a moot point since you can't have both.

Good luck with the tank.

thanks everyone im now the proud owner of a new upsized 18 gal tank With sand and im sure my kuhli is lovin it. i went to get another but the rest looked a little ichy so i will wait. anyway it looks pretty good i washed the sand till it ran clean so well see what happens. oh by the way i used the pin up on changing to sand and have the little socky in there and all..
