I've been leaving the lights on just over 12 hours a day, and having both bulbs burn most of that time (total of 120watts 6500k and a 6700k in a 37g). all over the rocks, there's definitely something growing, and it's only on the side of the rocks facing the lights... all the undersides have nothing growing. but the color is pretty much brown. yet my mbuna have been grazing on the slight brown-ness on the rocks. could it be the beginnings of green algae?

i read somewhere that i'll get brown algae briefly before the green stuff kicks in. my tank has been cycled for over 3 years, so it's well established, just to add that bit of info.

i really hope some nice green algae is coming, cause the mbuna definitely don't bother each other as much when they are constantly grazing on the algae. relaxing to watch too.

Liquid fertilizers help too, but if you don't have any plants in there then don't waste money over it

EDIT: 12 hours straight or is there a siesta period?

I happen to have a bottle of Seachem Flourish Iron from when I used to keep a few live plants. Would that help at all? Also, would traces of Iron hurt the mbuna in any way?
