I have posted alot recently as im getting a new tank built. I went into the shop today to see about the cost and how long it would take. The guy at BOSS aquariums was very helpful but through in the possibility of a sump for my tank. I had never considered it and no nothing about the benefits or the negatives of that over an external.

The tank is going to be holding discus and will be just over 50 UK Gallons.

Does anybody know anything about them? Are they better? Would it be better for my discus? Any thoughts would be great!!

Cheers in advance!

Sump it!

Much larger water volume =more stable, which is excellent for discus
Great filtration, especially with a trickle tower, as I'm doing on my 270gallon.

The trickle tower wouldn't be that great if it was going to be a planted aquarium as all the gas would gas off.

Personally i wouldnt bother with a sump on a freshwater tank under 180g, you can easily filter 50g with a good canister filter which is cheaper and easier to set up than a sump with all its pipe work and will run a lot more quietly.

I still think it should have a sump :p ...It's probably just me because I'm getting one. :X

Yes but your tank is 270g, a bit difficult to filter that with canisters.

I agree with cfc absolutely no point in putting a sump on a 50g tank. Also give ND aquatics a call alot cheaper than boss and bloody good tanks my new tank is by them have a look at the quality and check there website you will be suprised in the difference in price.

My 412 filtered by 2 canisters and 2 internals.

Now in your case i would have gone for a sump as it would be cheaper to run one large pump than it is to run the 4 smaller pumps of the filters, but i can fully understand why you wouldnt want one, sumps can be noisy and if something goes wrong things can get very wet.

Yeah when I convert the garage over ill run sumps out there but in the house the missus wouldnt be chuffed. Anyways to make space for this tank I closed 3 down so the electric bill is kinda the same so not to much of a hit n the pocket.

I am still undecided about the sump. I have looked at ND aquatics and there tank units do look great and classy it's just BOSS are right on my door step and as i have been in and out a lot the guy has got to know me and has given me a reduction. The price of the sump was coming in at less than the external but price doesn't really matter.

I realise that the sump gives me extra capacity which would enable me to keep a few more fish i suppose. I have been told that the sump is quieter to run than an external filter though. I have never had an external so i am unsure of the noise that the externals will put out.

The only thing i don't like about the BOSS tanks is that the lids seem a little flimsy! But i will address that with him if i order it.

Do ND deliver to Scotland? Anybody have there website address or contact details.

And lastly thank you for your advice and does anybody else have any other suggestions about this??

Dunno about delivery to Scotland it will cost. As for sumps being quieter than externals thats crap my externals are silent.
