My friend's fish all died after a futile attempt to save them from ich. He wants to know if it is better to start fresh or treat the tank with meds and heat.

If he now has no fish, then best to start over & do a fish less cycle, as it will take at least 30 days for the ich to die out

If you can get the temperature to 31C or higher the ich will die out within 5 days even without meds, but I'd use meds as well just in case.

Hey guys, I'm the one the OP was talking about. I've spent the past couple days reading through the forums and seem to be learning a lot. I've decided to do a full fish-less cycle and set the tank up properly this time around and do it right. My one question about the ich, though - I'm going to dump the tank and clean everything and start fresh, and I'm assuming the ammonia and the 30+ cycle days with no hosts will kill off any remaining traces of the disease, but before I bank on that assumption, I just want to make sure I'm thinking correctly. Thanks guys!

To be honest, there was no need to start the tank over.
The ich dies without a host if the tank is left running for 2 weeks max. You could have just dosed a bit of ammonia from time to time to keep the filter bacteria fed.
