I've recently had a couple of fish die but im not sure if its anything to be concerned about.

Firstly, last weekend when i was cleaning my tank, a dead cherry barb which was trapped in my plants floated to the surface. I netted it out and had a look at it. It was very fat and swollen. I dropped it on the floor and it burst!

Secondly, today i noticed a dead preacox caught up in my plants. not swollen this time, but it looked to have a fine white hair on it.

i've not seen any of these things before. Can anyone shed some light?

Spec:
4ft
85gal
Ammonia = 0. Nitrite = 0. Nitrate = 60ppm
Stock = 10 rummynose tetras, 10 glowlight tetras, 9 cherry barbs, 6 ottos, 6 bosemani rainbows, 2 preacox rainbows.

50 - 70% water changes every week without fail. Plus hoovering etc
Fluval 405 and U4 filtration.

Thanks :)

Everything sounds okay. Is it a relatively new tank? Sometimes it just takes a new tank a bit to settle in. But also, sometimes you just get weak fish and they were bound to die no matter where they were. I would just keep doing what you are doing and watch the tank carefully.

The tank has been set uup for about 6 months. So its not new really. I've nit had any deaths for a couple of months either. just coincidence that i get 2 in 1 week?

Could well be a coincidence. Now is the time to just watch and double up efforts to keep your water as pristine as possible. Good luck.

Did you look carefully at the cherry barb when it, um, burst?

Just wondering if it could have been a parasite, and you likely would have seen them at that time. And the preacox may have had some kind of fungus. As Karin said, time to be vigilant for any other weird things happening, and keep the water in as good a shape as you have been.
