To Angel Or Not To Angel!?

Black Knife fish can grow to 2ft in length! they are amazing but you need a 5ft tank minimum for these guys.

Gouramis are a no no with Bettas as they will fight to the death and almost all Cichlids will shred the Bettas fins with maybe the exception of Rams or Apistos.

Yeah, I noticed that they get big. Guess I'll wait for my bigger set up for that. I have gouramis in my tank already and them and the betta pay absolutely no attention to each other. I never realized how difficult it is to get fish! Anyone else have any suggestons for a peaceful larger fish?

Well if you want a Cichlid your best bet is either Apisto or Rams. Bolivian Rams get a little bigger, and can be a little more hardy, but GBRs are much more nicely colored, GBRs do need their water changes though so you must be diligent.

Not if she has a PH of 8.0! The rams would HATE that. Most rams like their water around 6.0-7.0. You might be able to get shellies, they like harer water. Reasearch them, they might make a good addition to the tank. Not sure about the betta though. Never kept a betta in a community aquarium, only in his own tank. A female betta, that is different. Talk to your son about maybe getting a 5 gallon and putting the betta in there. You might be able to get the angels then. But like you said, he has a large aquarium for some time now so he might get kinda pissy in a smallerr one.

Although it is a bit high chances are a Ram would be fine. Rams DO NOT need their water 6.0-7.0. Have you tried using peat to lower pH? What kind of substrate do you have? Ornamental rocks of any kind? Higher range pH is tolerated fine by Rams like most tank raised fish. If your tap water is 8.0 in pH, and if the pet store is using tap water and the Rams look healthy then they should be fine your tank, that is if you choose to get them.

I made my decision last night because I'm kinda tired of researching and thinking about it....now I'm kinda doubting the decision I made. I'm posting it in the tropical discussion forum if anyone is interested.

They will be fine, but they won't be happy at all. Unless they were bred in that type of condition, which I don't know how because that is just too high for them to be comfortable to breed. I never said that they need their water lower than 8.0, I said that they would prefer it. I would decide against rams in that PH, but you on the ohter hand... Hope I didn't offend you.
