Hello,

I have been thinking about trying to grow a Java fern in this jar. I have quite a bit of experience with live plants, but have only really dealt with easy plants in stocked aquariums (have had both vallisneria & java ferns take over my entire tank at different times

My question is - how viable is this idea? I know from experience that Java ferns are very hardy and tolerant of a pretty wide range of conditions so I'm not concerned about light, oxygen or CO2 levels, and I will be able to do water changes on it frequently, but what about nutrients? I never supplemented nutrients for my ferns before and they thrived, but that was with a tank full of fish - how can I substitute the nutrients supplied by the fish, or do I not have to?

Thanks!

I've got a Java fern and an anubias and some moss growing in a goldfish bowl and they're doing great, although very slow growing. They get just daylight and a 100% water change once a week. The bowl is fed a small amount of fish food though, as I have some trumpet snails in there.
