I have a 10 gallon for my painted turtle, along with some plants and a few fish. I got a new plant recently which came in a plastic pot and rockwool. A few weeks after adding the plant I've noticed very think pink worms being sucked up during gravel vacuuming. After extensive research I've discovered (I think) that they are tubifex worms. My only question is are they safe for the turtle and the fish?
Also around the same time that we got the new plant the nitrate levels are consistently very high, even with daily 75%+ water changes. Nitrates will jump from 10ppm to 40 over night. Could this be related to the worms?

The worms just started to poke out of the gravel and wave around in the currents. Really gross...

By the way, the worms are very think, about <1mm thick, round, light pink, segmented. Some are about an inch long.
