I was given some tuxedo platy fry of various sizes and a few are just teeny tiny little things.

I was hoping to give the rest of my fish(cories and rasboras) a new years treat of frozen bloodworms but I dont want the babies to choke and die on them..

Would it be safe to toss some in or should i wait till the babies are a bit bigger?

Ive read somewhere that u can chop them up a bit but i would imagine that would get messy and stinky during the process.

my fry are in the tank with the adults and get live and frozen blood worms they dont choke on them they wont eat what they cant handle , just like being in the wild :)

good luck

Sarah xx

Ok thanks guys.. i had just read somewhere i think(unless it was a dream) that someones fry had choked to death on a peice of bloodworm.

I tend to overworry as well so just wanted to make sure.

Im off to give them all their new years treat then, I love to watch them go nuts hehehhehe

first bites is a great food to start your fry on.that's what i've used for all of mine.

none of my fry get fed anything special they eat what the others do
In a community tank there is enough bits for the fry to survive off the adult food

this is my first time having any fry and its been quite fun actually...

i was searching in the pet section on craigslist and came across an ad for free platy fry in my area so i decided to pick some up

he gave me 7 of all different sizes

theyve been eating crushed tetramin pro tropical crisps 3 times a day and have been growing well...

this is the biggest one just now who thought she could handle a big bad bloodworm- she was swimming around for about 3 minutes with it stuck there, i thought she was choking but it was eventually spat out, half missing so i guess she managed to eat some...

Hi kaisa :)

Either that fry is tiny or that bloodworm is big! :hyper:

I've had good luck feeding even very small corys frozen bloodworms by shaving bits off the block (taken directly from the freezer) with a razor blade. Even chopping live blackworms with a razor blade isn't as bad as it sounds. Just chop up and down quickly. :D

Your right that bloodworm was the fattest one i put in the tank and it just had to choose that one, silly fish. that fry is huge compared to the others i got, there all so cute and im having fun raising them and watching them grow.

Thats a great idea to shave off peices of bloodworms while its still frozen to make small peices for smaller fish.... I actually think somenes laid eggs in my tank as theres a bunch of little white balls hanging off a water sprite leaf!!!

I think it may be the albino cories as the only others in this tank is harlequin rasboras and the 7 platy fry. Ive noticed them for 2 days now and it hasnt changed at all . i tried to take a pic, its not that great as the balls are in the bakc of the tank, they look like the cories eggs ive seen on a google search...

Havent seen any snails in the tank so dont think it could be that... what do you think, they are right there in the middle of the pic

Hi kaisa :)

I think I see what you mean, but I'm not sure. Are there any on the back glass in the lower left quarter?

Nope, ive scoured the whole tank over a few times and have only come across this little bunch on the water sprite leave.

Have never seen anything like it before and it just looks like it doesnt belong at all.

No ones eaten them yet but ive been keeping this tank very well fed because of the fry so they have not been really out searching for food...

I will try to get a better pic but they usually just turn out a big blur lol

SHRED THE BLOOD WORMS :D

Ive lost 3 fry to choking on blood worms. I usually shred the blood worms with a grater, but a few weeks ago i lost one fry in my fry tank, and coulnt figure out why it had died. I had given the fry bloodworms earlier, and although i had grated them, there was still a few bits that were longish. I didnt think that it would've choked cos I'd read that fry wont try to eat anything thats too big for them.
Anyway the week before Christmas I was rushing out and dropped a bloodworm cube into each of my tanks (including the fry tank), before I left. When I came back home, one of the fry was dead, with a piece of bloodworm coming out its mouth. The piece of the bloodworm that could be seen was almost the same length as the fry itself. I took out the dead fry and thought, whats the chances of that happening again??
Bout an hour later another fry was dead and again it had a bloodworm coming out its mouth. After this I removed ALL traces of bloodworms from the tank, even teeny tiny bits, just to be sure.

I know some posts to this topic say that it shouldn't be a problem, and I honestly thought myself that it wouldn't be and was suprised when it happened. I was really pissed off with myself for not shreddin the bloodworms, but its def a mistake that won't happen again

Yikes that is very scary!!! Sorry for the fish you lost as well.

I had a suspicion that they could very well choke on them as the bloodworms are quite solid and seem a bit hard to chew for the litterler fish so that is why i asked in here but these folks convinced me it would be fine ahaha

Im postive the fish in the picture had it wedged and stuck in its mouth as it swam around franticaly for a bit flicking itself about trying to get it out

I was ready to net him up and pull it out really quick since so much was hanging out but i thought that may harm him more than letting him work it out natrually for a bit which eventually with much strenght he was able to spit half of it out. Its tummy got much bigger after that lol.

Doesnt it make a huge stinky mess when u grate bloodworms?? I personally cant stand the smell or look of them and when i get a whiff while feeding my fish them i just about vomit

OMG, just since writing that last msg i seen a fry in community tank, and got 6 so far outta it and into me fry tank:D so excited, didnt even realise any fish were to drop soon lol

but bak to the bloodworms :)
i ue the frozen cubes, and just grate them straight the tank. they can be a pain to grate solidly, but if ya dip them in the water for a split second it should moisten them enough to grate really easy. never got a smell off them tho,
