Hi all,

I would appreciate any suggestions.

I had two Opaline Gourami's in a 29 gal tank. As one was bullying the other constantly, the bully was taken back to the LFS. The remaining was fine for a month or so and became a specimen in the community tank. But then he became such a voracious feeder that he was chasing the other fish, some blue tetras, some serpae tetras and some platies. I can't believe it was starvation. They were getting fed twice a day. If a fish was a little weak, the gourami got him. A couple of the blue tetras jumped out of the tank trying to get away from him.

Out of desparation, we isolated him in a 5 gallon tank with a fair amount of water sprite both planted and floating. From that time on, he has been very timid. If anybody walked into the room, he immediately bolted for an upper corner of water sprite.

After a month, we moved him to a 20 gallon tank with 11 cories. There is some floating water sprite, a couple of moss covered pot-caves, some anubias and some java fern. It is fairly heavily planted.

He is still very timid. He basically hides in a back upper corner with some water sprite or occasionally will go into the back moss pot-cave.

He will eat out my hand at times but basically we never see him. I accidentally introduced some red cherry shrimp into the tank. I thought he would hunt them down but he hasn't. He basically just hides.

Seems like it is all or nothing with this one.

Any suggestions to get him free swimming again.

Thank you.

Have you thought about adding a few females with him? I've also read that Gourami's don't like fast water flows so maybe where he's going is the calmest in the tank

Thanks Wilson,

I'm guessing he's a male based on the way the other bullied him. I got him before I knew how to determine sex and now that I know how he stays in hiding. I've got a bare tank to which I can move him. Then I can be certain and get one of the opposite sex. Thanks for the idea.

Waterflow isn't an issue but that is good to know because I've been thinking of upping the flow in that tank.

Greg
