Is it ok to use timers with metal halides?

yeah perfectly fine. times always state their max load on the packaging, just dont exceed this

Yep. As above though make sure you check the max load on the timers.

yeah, cos the timer will just stop power to the ballast so technically it wont be on 24/7 even though the switch will be

Purchase a Light Switching Contactor WHY.... because
Domestic plug in timers are not designed to switch On/Off HID control gear as used in modern ballasts leading to timer and ultimately lamp failure.
