I took my friend’s 8 inch pinktail trigger over three weeks ago. It’s been in a QT tank since that time. It’s been lethargic and has white spots since I got him. My friend was closing his tank and believes he may have overmedicated his entire tank before he gave this guy to me. I’ve tried to get rid of the ich but nothing seems to work. He eats a little but nothing for his size. I may just put him out of his misery. I read clove oil and then vodka or clove oil and then more clove oil is the most humane thing to do. Any ideas?

what frozen foods are you feeding it ?

what are your water Conditions ?

how long has your QT been set up for ?

what treatments have you given it ?

i might be able to help you with it if you answer all the questions

Sigh... these fish have a very high stamina. They can take a lot, and I doubt ich per se would be enough to kill them.

Try feeding live crickets or mollies. Getting food in the fish will probably be enough to heal it. Also;

Try a freshwater bath, done by preparing fresh water with similar characteristics (e.g., similar pH, temp, hardness, etc) to the display tank's, then dipping the [fish] in for a few minutes. Seems to work in my experience, and I am convinced that it saved my sailfin tang's life a year ago. The tang's still kicking, too, in my cousin's tank.

Clove oil is reportedly the most humane, but I strongly urge you not to use it in this case... give the fish more time. You will be surprised at what great pets they can be, and I would give a lot to have another one. :good:

Try using a copper based medication and run it for 2 weeks. That will get rid of the ich.

Have a background on the quarantine tank and put a plastic plant or something in there for the fish to feel a little more secure. When the whitespot is gone the fish will probably start feeding again. Also check the water quality and make sure it doesn't have an ammonia or nitrite reading.

If you have to euthanase the fish then adding Clove Oil to a container of water with the fish in, will put the fish to sleep but will not kill it. You then have to dispatch the fish after it is unconscious. You can either hit it on the head or leave it in the container of water and put it in the freezer until frozen. But try treating the fish first and give it a chance.
