My Platy female is hiding and her gills are moving very quickly (I assume that's the fish version of breathing quickly) and her pectoral fins are moving very quickly. Are those things normal for a fish giving birth?

Thanks.

To my knowledge, it does take a while only because I just had my guppy give birth to some fry. My guppy had one sticking out her for a while so I gave her some food which made her pop it out quicker. You have to be careful though because if it stays in her for too long it might die. My guppy had 6 fry and only 2 came out alive. Unfortunately this is what happens. My female died in the end because she had delayed her pregnancy for too long. As for her gills moving so quick...that's normal too...it just like when a woman is in labour...she breaths really quick to help. I hope this helps.

Thank you for your response!!!! I appreciate it. I've fed the fish tnoight, but she hasn't been interested in food. She apparently popped out the little fishy awhile ago 'cause I don't see a tail hanging out of her anymore and she's swimming around some. I'm guessing she ate it :( What makes 'em delay the pregnancy? Any ideas? I figured her gills moving quickly was normal, but since I"m new to fish, I didn't know for sure. I can tell you most anything you want to know about goats giving birth  , but fish...

Thanks again.

Usually the guppy delays the pregnancy when she feels in danger or stressed and she basically thinks to herself, if shes going to die, whats the use of giving birth young.

What does the baby goat look like when it is released?

Like Eelzor said, stress is a big factor. My guppy seemed to be very stressed even though I tried everything to help her calm down but I think she was stressing because of the pregnancy not the environment. I tried keeping the light off and putting something around the glass so she couldn't see out, thinking maybe this would help but it didn't seem to...I did a lot of different things but nothing worked. Good luck though with everything and I hope it all works out. I hope you don't lose your fish like I did.
