We have a 115gallon tank and would like to put malawi cichlids in it. My dad also wants to keep 2 tilapias with them.

What is your view on keeping 2 tilapias with malawi cichlids ?

cheers

DEEEEEEATH....

From what Ive read, even tho malawi cichlids are agressive this fish take it to a whole new level :shout:

One of my favourite looking fish, but Id only really house one by itself as they are hellbent on killing :p

Malawi cichlids are nice, if your dad wants a larger fish with them maybe suggest some sort of hap?

a 115 is too small for one buttikoferi much less TWO! (IMO)

their aggression is well known, I'm rather surprised your asking to house them with other fish.
tell dad to research them more before jumping into something he'll regret.

Thats the thing with my dad, he dosnt know alot about fish and he just thinks a fish can be kept with a fish.
Im the one with the knowledge on fish, however, i have never kept any african fish so my knowledge on them is very much limted.

How many gallons would you reccomend for a tilapia then ?

Thing is the only thing you can comfortably keep a tilipia with is a rock really, and they need a huge tank as the grow in excess of 14", So I guess it would have to be a 5x2x2 or 6x2x2 for a lone specimen.

So they cant be kept with any other fish at all then ?

Really really, do you research before even thinking about this fish they give cichlids a bad name :D, Nice fish tho, many people have sucess until the size of 6" before that they are quite shy and then they just turn

The problem is sorted now, we are going to have some of the more larger american cichlids in the tank and not have any africans at all.

 are you freaking serious???? do you not listen to what your being told?

buttikoferi are way too aggressive to be kept with other fish!!!!!!!!! that includes...cant believe I'm saying this..american cichlids because guess what? their "other fish" too

Waterbender, I do believe he meant american cichlids instead of the t.butterkofferi.

However, if you've caught his latest topic, they've now decided on mbuna, peacocks, or the smaller haps. :good:

dthoffsett is right... im not keeping tilapias or american cichlids at all. Im having africans instead.
