My convicts have bred in my 100g and i have 2 external filters running...so to stop the fry being sucked up i cut up a pair of tights and put them over the intakes of my filters.

However now i have no flow :S

1 external (the Ehiem one) just trickles and the other (a Fluval 305) just spits occasionally :S

Usually they are very powerful....should this be happening?

Are the tights thick.
You need really fine tights so the filter flows right.
Not familar with your type of filter. But I just put some netting over the outflow pipe and secure it with an elastic band.

Do you have filter wool in the filters?

I had the same trouble with my fluval 405 in my turtle tank, because of the mess they make the intake strainer needs cleaning a lot. When the intake is reduced (as I would guess it is using tights) it seems to make the pump work harder and I found with mine it was the filter wool being sucked up inside the unit. I took the filter wool out and its working loads better.

This happens when material or screen is wrapped tightly on the intake. Attach it so it is baggy, not wrapped around. This is why I prefer a piece of filter sponge, poke a hole in the sponge, slide it over the intake.
