Went into my LFS today and saw a TIGER FISH? it was a really nice fish , like a dark brown with light coloured stripes, it was a freshwater because it was in with some tetras? anyone know what it is? any info?

Did it look something like:

(maybe a slightly different colour or shading, there aer a few fish from the same family)

There are a few species known as tigerfish but I think that is the most likely one. They are FW/Brackish depending on the exact fish and they all get really big.

A Hydrocyon vittatus? Did it have some rather impressive looking teeth?

If so then yes they are freshwater, but they are seriously aggressive carnivores.

Yes that was it but it was alot darker , like a brown colour. I would really like to have this fish , what size does it get? Is good in a community tank?

Really nice looking fish :hyper:

It gets to about 1.5ft so no, not really one for the average community tank :) The smaller ones get to at least 12 inch's. i think they also need to be kept in small groups or pairs too so you need a really big tank.

Also some of these fish need brackish water (though some will be ok in FW).
