i have noticed that one of my 4 tiger barbs had a sore red patch on his skin! the fish is swimming and eating fine but it seams to be getting bigger and bigger and is concerning me! looking closer at the edges of this imperfection there seems to be white fluff very slightly! (abit like fungus) it looks abit like a open wombe but im not sure what to do with him! i have had my fish for a while now and have a few tanks but it is the first time i have came across this!
please please help

sounds like he has an ulcer coupled with a secondary infection of fungus
both are a bacterial problem and a course of melafix will help heal the wound and stop the fungus.

now you should identify why he got an ulcer in the first place,
often it is a physical injury that has become infected but it could also be
poor water quality.

what are your water parameters, (pH, ammonia, NO2, NO3 etc)?
how often are your water changes?
how much do you change?
how do you clean your filter, if at all?

thanls 4 ur reply!
the ph, ammonia no2 and no3 are all fine!
the other fish are all ok aswell!
there was one tiger barb that jammed itself behind the filter but i could find which one did it! it may well have been him and he could have caused himself a injury as i had 2 get him from behind there!
i do a 20% water change every 2-3 weeks! i am moving house at the weekend so there will be a larger water change! the filter was already in the tank and is not really very good but when i move i will be changing to a fuvel filter!
there has recently bin a lot of algie in the tank due to there being to much light in the tank and poor filteration! when these problems are sorted at the weekend do u think the fich will get better?

I think you should have a read of the pinned article in the beginners forum
here is a link Step-by-step Guide To Weekly Maintenance, For the beginner.
you current regime is a little innefficent.

when you change the filter, run the new one and the old one in the tank for at least a week
this way you'll avoide a recycle or a mini cycle.
as for which filter an external cannister would be my choice but if your budget dosn't allow for that
choose an internal that is over rated for your tank, IE your tank = 60ltr the filter should be rated for upto 80ltr
Brands are a personal choice and a quick search of the forums will bring up many response to that choice.
