We have just set up a 4 footer running a external Eheim 2217.
The tank holds 200-250L; so go with 225L.
The filter runs 1000L per hour.
The tank is planted quite well with anubias.

We want to do a tank with all tiger barbs, and perhaps a red tail shark to keep them on their toes.
How many tiger barbs do you think we can handle once all is cycled?

Thanks all and looking forward to putting photos up soon.

Huh? I used to keep 20+ adults in a 30 gallon 3 foot long!

I think you could put quite a few more in that sized, filtred tank....?

they are very active fish and need alot of room for a fish that size!!!

id go between 20 and 30, the filter and tank could easily handle that. they are fast and active fish but 4 foot is easily adequate, adding less fish isn't gonna make them need less room, you can stock the tank to the tank and filters handling capacity, but overall 4 foot is easily adequate for between 20 and 30 tiger barbs, and a rtbs!

I have the same size tank as the op and I started this hobby with tiger barbs. At one point, I kept 19 tiger barbs without any hassles. as long as your tank stats remain safe, i agree with 20 to 30, despite what other members on this forum will say.

55 gallons is a good amount of space for them. I had mine for about a year before I got tired of them and traded them in. They got to be about 1.5 inches a piece before they hit the road. It was quite a site! IME, they formed several smaller shoals instead of one great big one.

If you plan on buying that many, make sure you get an equal ratio of males to females. Maybe more females than males. I'm sure someone will chime in & correct that if I'm wrong. Good Luck & take some pics!

I got 9 in 190L and they fully grown and seem to have plenty of room. Not sure on male to female ratios should be but I got more females than males. I want to add 3 green tiger barbs at some point. Are you getting a mix of variations or just the standard looking tigers.

Thanks for the replies all, i'll go with 20, adding 4 every week or two.
I was going to go with 14 normal tiger barbs and 6 albino's to break them up a little bit - not a fan of the green ones.

I'll get photos up of the tank in a little while.
