Got a juwel 120 that has now finally finished cycling and is now home to 5 tiger barbs yes I know there reputation but I love em  They have settled in well 8 hours in hiding but have been out to feed and are starting to get adventurous so bearing in mind there fin nipping reputation what next? want some colour thinking of some type of tetra all help appreciated

i think it is recommended that you keep at least 8 to keep aggresion to a minimum, then i don't see why you couldn't have a group of tetras too, which do you have in mind?

Going to get 3 green tiger barbs tomorrow to bring them up to 8 then leave a week and probably get some neons

Adult tiger barb:What is that tiny little fish?
Other Tiger-A neon
Adult Tiger Barb-That was a tasty snack :shifty:
Other Tiger-Save one for me....

I think you get me drift, when they get larger and grow to their full size bye bye.

neon and cardinal tetras are still large enough for adult tiger barbs right?

Ok I get the drift that is why I posted the thread to find out what are the best tank mates for them

Any tetras that get larger than 2 inches should be fine. IME faster moving fish do well with tigers, since they are harder to catch, the tigers generally leave them alone. I'd suggest going to your LFS and just watching the fish, then get something really active. Zebra danios are a good choice.

Just making sure your not saying neon tetras are larger than 2 inches?? Because they will be eaten by Adult tiger barbs sooner or later. But yes I agree with you larger tetras should be ok. I forgot how big his tank is but some giant danios would look cool.

I have the same tank, along with 8 tiger barbs (i love the albino ones) a good species would be zebra danios IMO they are acyive and look lovely in a group of 5.

is what you said a fact? did you have experience on this? will neon and cardinal be eaten by adult tiger? really sure?
because im about to buy cardinals..
i have a male betta with my tiger barbs.. he seems fine..

Cardinals shouldn't be in any danger; it all depends what size they are when you buy them, of course. The thing about Tiger Barbs is that once you have those, any further additions have to be big/quick/aggressive enough not to be in any danger from them. That does limit the choice of other tankmates further down the line. I'm not sure a 120 is big enough for more than one lot of fish as lively as Tiger Barbs; they do need a lot of swimming space.

Well neons def do not get 2 inches or larger!! I have kept tiger barbs before not with neons as they are all pretty much diseased anyway. Like always, it depends on the fish and all kinds of other things like stated above tank size, the size of the fish etc...It may work, or the tiger barbs may grow up and eat some neons. It all depends... and I was only mentioning neons not cardinals as you stated, I have no experience with cardinals. I can guarantee you for a fact that your tiger barbs will eventually nip your betta to death. Those two are a big no-no. But hey, If it works for you then great.
