is it possible to "over filtrate" a tank?? i know its not good to have a filter in a tank that isnt capable of the job but would there be any downsides to having like a internal filter that is up to the job and then adding an external filter which would also do the job on its own.??

sorry if that is a stupid question, just curious really

the only downside I can think of is if the current is too strong for the fish you keep.
A lot of people "over-filter" their tanks though.

It would be a bit pointless if the internal filter is working fine. Or you would just get a bigger filter instead of two seperate ones.

Ditto what littlest said. Extra filtration allows you to keep more fish or messier fish without having the worries of ammonia build up. A second filtr also, IMO, adds a bit of security. If one filter happens to break, get clogged or the impailer gets stuck, you still have one filter running to prevent a massive problem.
