This is Really Weird, my friend has just noticed I`ve got a fish in my Tank , The tanks brand new, he must of come from the gravel I got from my Friends Piranha Tank Yesterday but he only had Piranha`s in the tank ? I can`t get hold of him but he did say a while back he had some bottom feeding fish that got eaten after a while but he never saw them anyway, could it be an egg of some sort thats just hatched ?

The pics are terrrible I`ll try and get a better one but the fish is tiny about 12mm, I`ve tried putting some food in but he`s got no chance of getting it, what should I do ? and what is it ?

It`s not easy I`ll try later I don`t think the little guy (whatever it is) has much chance though as I`ve just started cycling and my ammonia levels are 5ppm alongwith the fact he can`t seem to get to any food.

Free Fish, happy days!!!

OoohHHHHHh looks like your doing a fish-in cycle now, how much ammonia do you think that little guy will produce.

I would like to see more picture if you can, if at first you dont succeed with a digital camera, just try, try , try again.

How do I get a good shot of him ? macro mode but no zoom and try and focus on a near by rock ?

After looking at the Piranha Fry I think he is one !

Tanks I could do with your McGyver skills to build me a up a fry Tank and filter out of odds and ends !

Hey Nick

Any updates on the strange creature in your tank?

Yes Tanks it looks like it`s a Red Piranha Fry (There were no other Fish in the tank and it`s a very small fry so sort of by default it had to be I`ve looked at pictures and it seems very similar to the pictures of Piranha Fry) not sure whether it hatched in the Tank or was Fry already, it`s a mistery ? My mate says he`s never seen any before but to be honest where his tank is you might not notice. My only other thought was that I `ve got my tank set on a high temp (86) maybe this made it hatch ???? Not a clue.

My Girlfriend retrieved an almost new goldfish tank with filter and air stone from her mum and I was going to use one of my heaters in that tank to try and save him (thought it was perfect) but the tank started leaking so I had to put him back in main tank. I went to Pets at Home just before closing to get a Clear Seal but they only had The smallest Sized, large or hexagonal which was typical, If he`s still alive in the morning I`ll pick up a small tank up on my way home it will probably come in handy anyway. (early signs of MTS ???)

He seems healthy enough swimming around and nibbling on food , do you think he`ll be suffering with the ammonia(5ppm) ?

Tanks BTW which method of adding ammonia did you use ? I added mine until I got 5ppm and I was going to top it up as and when but it hasn`t dropped yet , other methods describing adding ammonia until 5ppm is achieved then same amount again each day until nitrite spikes then half the amount?

That's a great story Nick, will you do me the honour of letting me name the fish. I think you should call it "Baby Jesus" because after all it was very similar to an immaculate conception. You can call your tank Mary!!!!

Also its nice to see that you are starting early with the MTS, if took me nearly a year to pick up a new tank after my first. I was a late bloomer

OK enough of that! The ammonia question. Just like yourself I got my tank up to 5ppm, just by adding and testing then adding and testing. After that, I added 10-15 drops of ammonia for every 10 gallons of water every day. I was using a 25% ammonia/water solution, it did seem a bit much and when I got my nitrite spike it was way off the charts. After I received my nitrite spike I dropped it back to 4-5 drops of ammonia for every 10 gallons every day. Then when my nitrates went to zero, I went shopping for my gilled friends.

I pretty much foll0wed the sticky in the advice section about fishless cycling

Fishless Cycling

Keep up the good work and I hope the weather holds fine for you and Baby Jesus and give my regard to Mary!
:)

lol at least you had a nice interesting species! i had some plants posted to me in dry bag, a week later there was a fry in my tank which was still cycling it was all very exciting... it was also a gold fish who is now huge and still lives in my tropical tank quite happily! how is the fry doing?

He didn`t make it I was gutted, after a disasaster with a tank with a leak I bought a clear seal 18" tank one evening and I was going to set it all up for him the next morning. I came down to the tank the next day and watched him for a while then he suddenly went near the filter intake and disappeared I looked for him but he didn`t appear so I took the filter lid off and he was in there dead unfortunatly. The weird thing was he never went to that side of the tank normally as if he knew then as soon as I`d got him with a tank set up he swam in !

He was a tough litttle fella he was somehow removed from his parents tank by hand then spent several days in my cycling tank with sky high ammonia levels, he was also syphoned up twice as well as spending a few minutes in a tank with a leak.

xD I don't know what that is, but I remember going to Petsmart to buy some fish...

I ended up taking 2 extra golden snails with me. They're HUGE now!
