i have some mollies and platies and catfish and love all of them, but i kinda want to have a slightly larger, fancier fish that enjoys swimming where i can see it more

i was thinking of getting some colorful gouramis, as i and my dad both really like the color.

would those be appropriate tankmates for my fish or would they be too aggressive?

either way, does anyone have some more appropriate/better/cheaper alternatives?

btw, ive got a 55 gallon tank with plants and quite a few little ornaments including some fake driftwood

Strip it down and have a Malawi tank?

a pair of gouramis would look nice. either pearls or oapline gouramis. i would'nt go for dwarfs as they often get diseases and are short lived.

i would also go for a small shoal. maybe harlequin rasboras or some type of small tetra.

ive seen the opaline gouramis and the harlequin rasboras and i like them both. And thanks for the advice on the dwarves ive seen them at the fish store and liek them a lot, but now i know not to get them

what about a mix of rainbow fish.

These look really deceptive in the shop as the juvenile fish are quite plainly coloured but 6 months down the line.

do a google image search for melatonia praecox as well aka dwarf neon rainbowfish

they're pretty as anything

for interesting and lively fish you can't go far wrong with dwarf cichlids, look up apistogramma agasizzi, cacatuoides, borelli ...... there's more but those are a good start.

i really wanted the boesemani rainbows, but they were out at the lfs (plus they were a bit expensive for me XD)

but i did get some australian rainbowfish... please tell me that wasnt a bad choice

Not familiar with all the species, but a 55 should be good for them. Great fish, too - I have dwarf neon rainbows, and they're stunning fish when the light gets them right.
