Why would you have to remove all the silicone? Why not just make a hole and put the pipe in, doesn't sound too hard to me. I'd say go for it if you want something original, make sure the fish can fit through the pipe though hehe :)
Oops, I misread what he was meaning. The only problem with drilling is you can't on tempered glass so that might put a stop to it there.

I don't know if his tanks are tempered however. If they aren't, then it's a cool idea. I've seen them before on 10 and 20 gallon tanks.
   I be a woman....  I am not thinking of drilling a hole in the glass, I will be using glass cutters...(like CIA agents use) to make one big circular cut. The tube is about three feet long and has a diameter of about 13 inches. It's big. It's won't be a weak point because it is the same thickness as both of my tanks, as long as I use the right kind of silicon and do it right. I will post a picture when it is done.

Sorry, with a name like Fishheads and no gender in the profile I just assumed guy.

What you're doing could work. I'm not sure if you can cut tempered glass in the way you're saying but I suppose it has to be cut in some way, how else can they size it? :p

do some research before you try to cut tempered glass. from what i understand it is cut to size before it is tempered. other than that i think it sounds seriously cool

Thats REALLY cool. I want one!!!

Dave
petfect can put it better myself

I still fear the tube would be a major, major weak point..... with all that weight in each tank they need to be on a perfect stand or surface that will not allow either side to move independantly, not even 1mm.

Your typical apartment floor is going to have some uneveness and spring as you walk by, I just cant help thinking there will be leaks in a relativly short time.

also dont see joining such big tanks together to be a good idea..!!

If the tube is not glass and is flexible even just a very little maybe??

Cutting a hole in side if the tank wount really cause a weak spot as the tube will be more reinforement than the glass you cut out..

But that just me.. I dont have 2 big tanks I'm willing to cut holes in even if there is a slight chance that it might work..

THe tank is complete and stocked with my new Tiger Barbs. It will be oscars soon, but I need to find a new tank for the Barbs. I ended up using a plexiglass tube that became 2 feet long instead...I miscut the first try. I leveled the base where the two tanks sit to the nearest millimeter. So far so good! I will make a new topic for the pictures!

My tanks were hand built in the first place so I had no worry about cutting the actual glass. (It's not tempered, just very thick glass) I guess I should've mentioned that earlier. I was still worried however, because the non-tempered glass is very fragile...THe bottom corners and upper corners are padded inside the black plastic linning with rubber to prevent any unnecessary pressure. My only worry is anything hitting the glass hard enough to break it.... (I made sure to use the strongest fishtank silicon sealer that I could find and everything seems to be holding well.) I finished about 2 in the afternoon yesterday and just set it up this afternoon, filling it with water from another tank that was already cycled and to temps.. Anyways, look for picture!
