Thinking Of Changing From Tropical Community To Mbuna Or Tanganyikan

Counted the cyps this morning and it appears that I`ve lost 1, can`t see any signs of either the fish or a dead body anywhere in the tank at all so I`m presuming the other fish have munched it

I might look at going over to the second closest MA at the weekend and getting another 3 to round the numbers up to 10 IF they have some in stock. Would 10 be too many?

They do well in groups, I think with Cyps it's getting the M/F ratio , it might be hiding in the rocks somewhere, or in that big conch shell :good:

No sign of the cyp at all today, they`re usually all zipping around at feeding time but nothing

I have no idea of how many f-m there are. I could sex the tropical fish so much easier than these :shout:

I guess I should just be thankful that after 2 weeks the others are ok....fingers crossed anyway. I tested the water earlier and all levels are fine.
Not really sure what`s happened to be honest

Anyway, I`ll maybe go to MA but then I might just leave things as they are for a while. :S

I received a brilliant mix of shells and barnacles this morning from some nice person :)

I think once I've messed about with placement of the shells that the multis and punks will be moving house

Well, just an update on how things have gone with my Tang setup:

I lost one of my 10 leptosoma so added another 3 a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately for some reason I`ve lost 3 now though. They did look pretty skinny to start with so not sure if they were just doomed anyway

I have now removed the multis into their own tank as the leleupi were being aggressive towards the fry that I discovered, hopefully the multis will now continue to breed and build up a nice little colony.
My punks have bred and there are fry in my tank, they may possibly have been eating the fry though as the number seems to have dwindled over the last day or 2.

I went over to MA today and bought a calvus I believe but I may be wrong  I`ll add photos later once he`s been acclimatised and settled into his new home. They`re kin of ugly but cute in a strange sort of way :)

A huge order went in and apprently there`s lots of new stock coming into MA on Tuesday, Tangs and Malawi apparently so next weekend I`ll be paying another visit to see what they`ve got.
Apparently they`ve ordered a fair few petricola and multipunctatus in as they know I`m looking for some and they also have another fish coming in that`s similar to the five bar cichlids but yellow and black colouring and much more placid than the five bars.

So.......I may have more to add next weekend ;)

Edited to add pic:

I honestly think your mixing to many species. Its ok when there young but thinks can go tits up later on. Id ask on cichlidforum for advice on your ideas. Sorry to sound negative :)

shame you had to move the muilties but lelupi are known to kill shellies

I understand your point and do appreciate your opinions :good:

I promise I wouldn`t add anything that would put the other fish at risk, the only reason I added the calvus is because I`ve moved the multis to thier own tank. The calvus is peaceful generally but can hold it`s own but I am aware that the multis would have been at risk alongside the calvus. I intend to stick with low aggression fish as the last thing I want to do is to start setting up a hospital tank :X
I will always ask for info either here, at MA where one of the lads has his own Tang setups or I`ll research a lot of sites first B-)

Very nice Calvus, I'm a big fan of these , very prehistoric looking, NICE
It's been nice to see all the changes going on in your set up, do you know what morph of leptasoma tou have in there ?

P.S. scrapped the species tank (just after confirming the order  ), LFS in Edinburgh going to order a load of Czech bred Tangs for me :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:  , they are due at the end of the month :good:

Keep the pics. comoing, I love that Calvus you have , very nice :good:

Meant to say , think the yellow and balck ones are Sexfasciatus :good:

Thanks, I think he`s lovely too...ugly but he`s growing on me

Sexfasciatus...that`s the ones!! :good: I`ve been doing some reading (lots more to do) and it appears it may not be a good idea to have 2 unless they`re 1m 1f? I`d rather get just 1 of a species if there is likely to be aggression but do you know if 2 females would work together, I ask not because it`s a going to be a definate addition but for curiosity sake?

So you`ll have your stock at the end of the month? Ooooh can`t wait to see pics and find out what you`ve decided on :fish:

Off the top of the head I would think 2 females would be fine but saying that I know absolutely nothing about these fish
It's good that MA are getting some more types of Tangs in, there is obviously a market there, it can only be a good thing seeing more of them on the scene.
2 LFS I have spoke to are of the "if it's not colourful we won't stock it" :grr: variety, saying that one had some nice Duboisi fry in and the other one had some awesome tret cichlids (five bar), really vivid purple blue like miniature frontosa  oh yeah they had baby frontosa as well, one LFS in Glasgow shall remain unamed didn't have much left and advised me Tropheus were Malawi so I left it at that  The Edinburgh LFS will order Paracyps (Blue Neon) and Cyps (variety of morphs) if I want (czech bred :hyper: ), still swithering , mmmm , TBH still having so much fun watching the fry tank, I bunged in some lava rock today and they are all over it  Sorry for going on a bit, it's just weird having the finances now but not knowing which way to go as far as stocking is concerned
Hope your tank works out whichever you put in there, any more pics. or updates on the Multies or Punks ?
How did the Punks act towards the other stock ?
:fish:

No worries about 'going on' it`s good to hear how the fry are doing and how you`re getting on with your setup, even if you do dither as much as me :X

MA here also have the baby fronts and the purple looking five bars, they`re lovely but that little voice at the back of my head tells me that they`re not good for my setup so I won`t be adding any. I`ll have to have a word with Ryan, the lad at MA who has Tangs and see what he thinks about the 2 female Sexfasciatus :look:

I forgot to reply about the cyps....I have absolutely no idea what type they are to be honest, their colours are now starting to show, one of them has some lovely bright blue colouring coming on the ventrical (sp?) fins, others have yellow dorsals, yellow or blue tails etc, (it`s a bit difficult to tell what colours they`ll end up with) so hopefully I`ll have some pics of them to show you and you might be able to help me out on the id?

The punks haven`t shown any interest towards the calvus, one of the leleupi went a bit close and the calvus began to bend his body at it. I`ve read that they do this to ensure the scales are raised against the other fish.....the leleupi got more than it bargained for
One of the ventralis seems to be quite friendly with the calvus, as though he`s showing it around the tank....it`s actually quite nice to sit and watch

I do hope that the shops begin to stock more Tangs, not only would the price hopefully drop a bit in time but people will really get a chance to experience what lovely, interesting fish they are :good:

They are interesting to watch, all the different personalties, I had to resist the urge and go home with a five bar, they were a good size and the colours were very vivd, and a decent price (for a change). The bending thing is cool to watch, the comp fry are doing it all the time, lots of scrapping , that;s why I added the other rocks. I don't think the lelupi will mess with your calvus to much, they are pretty cool fish, good the Multies are moved, your Calvus is a first class shellie predator.... :good:
